- What is an RSS feed?
- A “feed” is a way for a website to share, or deliver, it's content to users without requiring the reader to visit the website for updated information. Feeds ( most often referred to as RSS feeds ) are subscriptions to certain content provided by the website publisher, allowing updates and new content to be "fed" to readers automatically.
- How do I use a feed?
- Internet Web Browsers
Current internet browsers ( such as Mozilla Firefox, Microsoft Internet Explorer 7, Opera and Safari (Mac) have a built-in, or native ability to read RSS feeds. You might see a button like one of these
on a website that offers RSS feeds. The browsers mentioned above will display the specific RSS feed when you click the link or button provided. You can then subscribe to the feed directly in the browser.
- Feed Reader Programs
Programs, or downloadable software, may offer more options for your feed subscriptions. The programs will grab the RSS feed(s) from as many websites as you have subscribed to and display the results. These programs are called “Feed/RSS Readers” or “News Aggregators” and can be obtained for free online or as software you purchase. Some RSS Reader examples include NewsGator’s suite of products including FeedDemon (Windows) and NetNewsWire (Mac). Searching online will yield more programs with different options. - Reading Feeds Online
Online tools for reading RSS are also available such as Google Reader, Bloglines and NewsGator Online. Certain website custom homepages also provide areas to display feed subscriptions such as My Yahoo!, iGoogle and myAOL.
